John Ervin
Assistant General Manager
Bordertown Casino
I grew up in a family that owned retail businesses and restaurants, I learned early on the importance of customer service and the role that leadership plays in employee morale, motivation and loyalty. After graduation I joined the Navy in their advanced electronics program as a Nato Seasparrow Missile technician. I was soon placed in military leadership training and assigned as a missile mount supervisor during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. After the gulf war I served as a unit leader in a security team during Operation Southern Watch. After leaving the military I worked in the corporate world for a few years before going to work for my tribe in our bingo hall. I worked in all departments from security to inventory control. I worked my way up to Surveillance Director and now Assistant General Manager. I know first hand the damage caused by inadequate leadership and I know firsthand how competent and supportive leadership creates an atmosphere of success. I now work with tribes and their businesses in leadership development and hiring and training the right personnel. I truly believe that the two strongest defenses an organization has against internal theft are strong controls and strong leadership.
My specialties include
Integrity: Why it's important and how to develop and protect it.
Communication: what's your style, how to recognize the styles of your co-workers and use them to your advantage.
Knowledge: knowing what you don't know.
Vision: seeing things how they can be and how to get them there.
Empowerment: the art of allowing your employees to shine and make you look good.
Its a win/win.
Servitude: a leaders true calling.
